I’m merely a speed test away from a certification in mixology from the Mixology Wine Institute. One little test…
And it terrifies me!
So many people will tell you that you don’t need to go to bartending school to become a bartender. They’ll tell you that bars refuse to hire graduates fresh out of bartending school and that experience is the *only* thing a potential employer is interested in. I know this because this is what I was told by several people.
While to some degree it really is true, I couldn’t imagine walking into this career choice without rigorous training preparing me for an even more rigorous path. Granted, there are no guarantees I’ll land a high volume gig out of the gate, but I don’t think I could handle getting behind a bar and not having a clue. I mean, I’ve been studying & practicing pretty consistently & I still have a long way to go overall before I’ll feel like I really know what the hell I’m doing.
I did four minute drills at the school tonight to practice for my speed test that I hope to take (and pass) tomorrow. At first I thought it wasn’t so bad, until I didn’t really make it through my first drill and totally bombed my second. I’m going to practice like a mental midget all day tomorrow & I really hope that it will pay off.
Keep your fingers crossed & I’ll keep you posted. ;-p~
